Being findable is not the same as having a website
Plenty of small businesses have a perfectly good website that nobody ever sees. The site exists, it looks fine, and it appears on page four for the only search that matters. Meanwhile a competitor with a worse site and a better-maintained Google listing takes the calls.
The uncomfortable part is how little of this is about your website. For a local business, most of the visibility comes from a free listing you already own and probably have not touched in two years — and from what other people have said about you on it.
This series is the whole picture: where people actually search, what decides who appears, and what to do about it in order.
Where local customers actually look
Rarely where owners assumeThe map — before anything else
Search anything with local intent and three business listings appear above the ordinary results, with a call button attached. On a phone that can fill the whole screen. This is the highest-value real estate in local search, and your entry in it is your Google Business Profile, not your site.
Google reviews, as a filter
Once three businesses are on screen, the star rating and review count decide which one gets tapped. This is the step most owners never think about: you can win the ranking and still lose the customer to the listing with two hundred reviews.
Social — for checking you are real
People find you on Google and then look you up on Facebook or Instagram to see whether you still exist. A page last posted to in 2023 answers that question badly. It is a credibility check, not a discovery channel.
Your website — to decide
The last step, and the one that converts. By the time someone reaches your site they are close to enquiring; the site’s job is to not lose them. That is a different series.
